How important is the environment to you?
Come along as we unearth What Singapore Thinks about our environment and our love-hate relationship with plastic bags.
With temperatures easily soaring above 30 degrees these days, we are starting to feel the heat – figuratively and literally. Almost 7 in 10 Singaporeans find that global warming is the most serious environmental issue that we face today.
On that note, which do Singaporeans value more – ensuring our immediate survival or catering for future sustainability?
Generally, Singaporeans are torn about this. A little less than 3 in 10 Singaporeans think that ensuring a sustainable environment for our future is more important. On the flip side, 4 in 10 Singaporeans reckon that it is more crucial for us to ensure our survival today.
We’d like to think that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to this. It’s always good to have long-term planning in mind while tackling the problems of today!
Singaporeans and Plastic Bags
Reducing our usual of plastics is one way to tackle today’s environmental issues. What do Singaporeans think about supermarkets charging at least 5 cents per plastic bag?
In a HappyDot.sg survey conducted back in 2021, we found that 65% of Singaporeans are willing to pay at least 5 cents for a plastic bag, while 35% of Singaporeans would rather not pay for it at all.
Today, the percentage of Singaporeans who are willing to pay at least 5 cents per plastic bag has increased to 77%!
Additionally, when supermarkets start charging for plastic bags, 53% of Singaporeans indicated that they would stop taking plastic bags completely where possible and start bringing their own bags.
This is certainly a positive step towards reducing our plastic usage and going green! 😊
