It is August and it’s Singapore’s birthday month! This month, we look at Singaporeans and their take on their neighbourhood. For a start, in the spirit of National Day, we asked what kind of Singapore would Singaporeans like to see in the future. The top 3 words that came up were United, Safe and Caring.
Delving deeper, we asked if the “kampong spirit” still exists today in Singapore
The term ‘kampung spirit’ is commonly used here to refer to a sense of community and solidarity among residents.
It is heartening to note that more than 70% of Singaporeans believe that it is either existent or existent, just not that strong and actually feels that it is Important or Very Important that Singaporeans keep that “kampong spirit” alive.
If Singaporeans had a choice, almost half would like the opportunity and time to sit and have a chat with their neighbours and about 42% would like to enjoy some good food together to strengthen the bond and “kampong spirit”.
Check out too what Singaporeans look out for in the vicinity when searching for a house.
Ease of transport is topmost on almost 90% of Singaporeans minds when searching for a new house. This is no surprise as prices of cars are at a current all-time high. Retail and availability of Food came in next, and understandably so too as people prefer the convenience of having groceries and food available near their doorsteps.
With rapid urbanisation taking place in Singapore, will the “kampong spirit” stand the test of time? Will Care Facilities take precedence over Food as one of the Top 3 amenities when Singaporeans look for a house, as Singapore copes with an increasing greying population?
Only time will tell.
